Increase your blog traffic
I was reading John Reese’s Income.com blog where he announced TrafficJam.com. It’s similiar (yet different) to Bloglines. He claims it’s a great source to find blogs in your niche to share those posts with your own readers and discover new blogs in your niche that you didn’t know about.Another idea I had - search for other blogs on TrafficJam in your similiar niche, and leave comments with a link back to your site. If it’s “dofollow“, all the better for SE rankings, but you are still apt to get some free traffic if “nofollow”, especially if you are clever with your name/title/url/comment/blahblahblah.
Now that I bookmarked TrafficJam, I figured I want my blogs included in their results! Well, you have to be a part of the BlogRush Network (free) to be added. You basically add a snipet of code on your site, and for every impression you give them, they’ll load your last blog post title on another member’s similar site. I’ve tested BlogRush on one of my sites for a few months now, and have been happy with the results/stats so far.
And now that TrafficJam will essentially bring me even more traffic, I’m adding more sites to BlogRush.com and recommend the same to other bloggers. They manually approve to keep out the bad bloggers. You should be able to see my BlogRush widget in action in the sidebar of this very blog.
Next up, I think I’ll get rid of the Etology Ads in the sidebar, as I’m not caring for the ads being shown. I’m thinking of adding Jim Kukral’s ScratchBack widget. Anyone have good luck with it? ScratchBack appears profitable for Lynn Terry of Clicknewz. Hmmm, maybe I should buy a link on her site…
Give a little, Gain a lot.
I’m gonna share a technique that I use to drive traffic to some of my sites and build my email lists very inexpensively. Ready? SWEEPSTAKES! Yep, everybody likes to win something for nothing. Offer a chance to win when they register for your newsletter! Of course, the higher dollar value of the prize, the more likely people are to enter, but you don’t have to break the bank to buy a prize. I’ve even “re-gifted” prizes I’ve won from other contests. Just make sure you clearly state the rules (ie how many times they can enter, any residency restrictions, when the contest ends, yadda yadda). Once you have everything all ready set to go, submit your contest URL to sweepstakes directories. I plan to add more here as I find them…

YDF ForumSome directories ask, or even require, a reciprocal link to list your submission, so you may want to make a specific page for “More Contests“. Some links are forums, so you may have to register to post. Once your contest’s end date has arrived, pick a winner (you can even ask the winner to send a pic of themselves to post on the site) and start all over! Hope this helps.
To Follow or NoFollow? Leave your Link.
I stumbled across Andy Beard’s Ultimate List of DOFOLLOW & NOFOLLOW PlugIns looking for some “follow” advice on my blogs.
I downloaded the WP Plugin: Nofollow from Home to add the “rel=nofollow” to the homepage posts of this very site along with some of my other blogs, so Google wouldn’t follow the affiliate links. You can be penalized for too many affiliate links on a site.
Then Wordpress automatically adds the “rel=nofollow” to post comments, so I downloaded the DoFollow WP Plugin from Semiologic to remove the tag on comments and trackbacks. That will encourage other webmasters to comment and link to specific website posts knowing it will help their PR. Go ahead and try it out. Leave a comment on this very post including your URL - can’t beat a free one-way link… unless, of course, you do want to link to this site!
P.S. Yes, I know it’s Friday, and I am wearing a free t-shirt. I’ll see if I can get one of my daughters to snap a pic…
Press Release Submittals
It seems I’ve had a bunch of people contact me lately that already have websites of some sort or another, but want more exposure. And what do I suggest? This post will be the first of a few on where to “submit your stuff” with some free advice from me.
I highly recommend writing a press release about your website: announcing updates, it’s uniqueness, anything really. Then submit your press release to these places online for free. If your website pertains to certain geographics, also send to the corresponding newspapers in that area (maybe you’ll get some offline exposure as well). I will update this post as I come across new websites.
