The decision to work from home can have many advantages. First, you can make your own working hours and second, you can create your own working environment. But in this second possibility often lies the trap many people fall into. Sometimes your home can produce a lot of distractions which can actually lower the level of your productivity instead of raising it. It’s very important to separate the workplace from the rest of your private space and turn it into a productive home office.  The good thing is that you have a lot of possibilities, while in the office the only actual thing you can design according to your needs is your desk.

Hush, Hush

One of the primary causes for distraction is the noise. When deciding which part of your home to occupy for your work you should always choose the quietest one. If you have a large family with a bunch of kids jumping around you may even consider building soundproof walls, but still, that is advisable only in the most extreme cases.Usually, it’s enough to find an isolated spot that’s far from the street noise. In case you’re the person who needs a little noise in order to work you can always use music or simply open the window from time to time.

Comfy?

It’s always good to feel comfortable in your working environment, but too much comfort can destroy your motivation to work. Of course, you don’t have to sit on a completely stiff chair (although many people say it’s actually the best way), but you shouldn’t lie on the sofa, either. It’s very important to find the right seating support that suits you the best because that’s where you spend most of your working hours.  You need to feel comfortable in it, but the most important thing is to feel active. No point in buying office furniture that will put you to sleep.

Think out of the box, be out of the box

Finding an isolated spot for your work doesn’t mean you need to isolate yourself completely. In fact, you probably decided to work at home in order to avoid secluded cubicles of an office. One of the most important things for a healthy working atmosphere is the light. The space you choose must have at least one window for the natural light to come in. Besides the fact that it has a huge impact on your mood, it can also produce a beautiful and inspiring view. Of course, that doesn’t mean you don’t need lamps, but you should choose them carefully – if they’re too dim or too bright you won’t be able to work effectively.

‛One of these days I’m gonna get organiz – ized!’

This Travis Bickles’ quote from Scorsese’s’ ‛Taxi driver’ perfectly illustrates the biggest challenge we need to face when designing an office in our home. You can provide yourself with everything listed above, but if all the elements are not organized correctly you won’t be able to reach the peak of your performance. Just the fact that your new office is still the part of your home leaves you with a bunch of small distractions – dishes that need cleaning, laundry that you have to take care of, etc. There is also a lot of equipment and technology you need for your work that can stand in your way. There’s probably nothing more annoying than a web of cables under your feet. You need to have free space for circulation or otherwise, you’ll feel like an animal in the cage. That doesn’t mean you have to throw out half of the things you actually need, you just have to hide all the things you don’t want to look at while working. Today you can choose from a variety of effective and super cheap storage units that will suit your needs in the best possible way. Besides keeping things out of your way, the smart storage system provides you with the perfect organizing method where everything has its place, ready to be used.

Sprinkles on top

Now that you’ve made perfect conditions and cleared the space, as a final touch you can add some personal decorations. Just have in mind that those decorations can easily become distractions and start the whole process all over again. The best way is to use plants for decoration in order to bring some nature in. Besides their positive effect on emotions, they can also improve the quality of air. So, take a deep breath and step into your new home office.
