No one can deny that brands such as Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Amazon, and Google are some of the most recognizable brands in the world. What you may not know is that all of these multi-million dollar companies have something in common: they all started in someone’s home or garage. In fact, nearly 51% of all businesses did.
If you’re following the footsteps of Larry Page and Sergey Brin—the two Google founders who started the company in their garage—by starting your own business from home, then listen up and apply these three points.
Develop a Business Plan
When starting a business in any other location, having a business plan is one of the most basic elements of success. A business plan is like a roadmap. It sets goals and shows the steps that need to be done to get there. It also includes benchmarks that you want to reach so that you can measure your progress along the way.
Write down all of your ideas about what you hope will come out of your business. Sit down with a mentor who is experienced in the business world and go over your plan with them. They might be able to help you see flaws that you might have missed and, hopefully, help you brainstorm more ideas to implement into your plan.
Find Your Passion
Simply put, passion is “an intense desire or enthusiasm for something” (according to Google). If you start a business without that desire or enthusiasm, then why are you doing it? Make sure that your business’s purpose is something that you can be passionate about. Otherwise, you might get bored and neglectful in certain areas. If that happens, it is doomed to fail.
As you contemplate about the passion you have for your startup, consider the following quotes:
“You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.”—Steve Jobs
“A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position”—John C. Maxwell
Stay Organized
Being organized is essential for a home business to succeed. Otherwise, chaos would reign and everything would pile up. Dedicate a part of your home that will be used solely for the purpose of your business. This way, you won’t have to go sifting through children’s toys to get to the products you’re trying to box up to send to buyers. Use shelving and labeling systems to help keep things in order so that you will be able to access what you need quickly and not have to waste time looking for it.
If your house is small or you live in an apartment, you may also want to consider investing in a climate controlled storage unit to store old files or merchandise in. Doing so will help ensure that everything won’t pile up at home, taking away from your living space.
Without a business plan, you won’t have any direction—you’ll be completely lost and lose the race before it has even started. Without passion, you won’t have the drive to implement your plan to its fullest. Without organization, that plan might not be executed too efficiently and the business as whole might even go asunder. Although following the above tips can’t guarantee that your startup will succeed, they are absolutely necessary to get your feet on the path of success.
