In these tough economic times, searching for a job can seem like an impossible task. If you really want to get ahead of the competition and impress a potential employer, you need to think outside of the box and consider what tools are available to you.
If you haven’t already started LinkedIn to aid your job search, you’re missing a massive opportunity. Here, we look at five ways to use the professional social network to find a new job.
In This Post:
1. Optimize Your Profile for Search
LinkedIn is very popular amongst recruitment consultants, and more and more businesses are using the network to find top talent for their vacancies. But if your profile isn’t optimized for search, you could be overlooked. Think carefully about what keywords people are likely to use when they’re looking for individuals with your skills. So, for example, if you’re looking for receptionist jobs in Liverpool, your job title and location should be explicitly stated on your profile.
2. Reach Out to Your Business Connections
Make sure that you start to build a network of people you have previously worked with. If you haven’t spoken to some of them for a while, drop them a message asking how they’re doing and explaining that you’re looking for work. They might be able to tell you about vacancies coming up in their organization. As they say, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
3. Follow Companies in Your Industry of Choice
If you have your heart set on a specific company, make sure that you’re following their company page to receive regular updates about what’s happening in the organisation. If you’re following major businesses in your industry, you’re boosting your chances of hearing about upcoming recruitment drives.
4. Join LinkedIn Groups and Contribute to Discussions
Take a little time to search for LinkedIn Groups in your area of expertise, and start getting involved in conversations. Not only will this help to make sure that you keep up to date with the latest developments in your industry, but you could also get noticed by some very influential people. There are likely to be hundreds of Groups that interest you, but narrow it down to just three or four so you can keep on top of them.
5. Search for Jobs Daily
LinkedIn’s job boards work just like any other job boards, but many of the positions are exclusive to LinkedIn. As so many people are currently looking for work, employers often receive many high quality responses in just a few hours, and will therefore only keep the application period open for a limited time. To ensure you don’t miss out, get into the habit of searching for jobs every day.
By following these simple tips, you could find that your job search becomes a lot easier and more productive.
