One of the best travel careers you can do at your own pace is to plan other people’s cruise trips. This job requires you to know each cruise by heart so you’ll need to get in touch with the cruise trip managers and the different businesses at each stop.
You need to help customers plan their whole cruise vacation. This doesn’t stop with booking a ship. You also have to know all the ports they’ll visit and then plan all the shore excursions they can try.
Of course, this also means you need to conduct serious accounting. Customers need to know how much each excursion costs, how long each adventure takes, and other options in case they don’t want to go on the common trips. You need to plan where they can eat and which amenities they can afford.
The best course of action is to try these cruises yourself. Take photos and videos for each location, try each type of cabin on the ship, and go on every excursion possible. This gives consumers more confidence in your work since you’ll be an experienced authority on the subject.
2. Travel Consultant
Not everyone knows how to book a flight or get a passport. Some people might not know the requirements to get a tourist visa for one popular destination. Others might not understand how to book cruise trips for senior citizens and children.
You can be the travel agent to help them along the way.
Travel consultants are, in many ways, virtual assistants. You’ll aid people to retrieve all the necessary documents so they can properly travel.
Organize this job by listing all the services you can help them with. You can focus on helping with travel booking, getting documents for passports, passport application assistance, and hotel booking. Once you know which tasks you’ll prioritize, create a step-by-step to-do list they can follow and then calculate how much you’ll charge for each service.
3. Hotel Reservation Agent
Are you comfortable talking to people on the phone? Get a VoIP phone so you can work as a hotel reservation agent. You’re the person answering the phone whenever people call a hotel’s number to book a room, inquire about rates, or get a reservation.
To get this job, you’ll need to communicate with a hotel manager. If they outsource this task then they’ll let you proceed and will give you a basic rundown of their rates, room types, and amenities. You need to be able to pick up the phone and answer questions as if you were a real employee working at the hotel.
How do you earn this way?
There are two options. The first option is to negotiate a regular paycheck. However, this is a rare occurrence and the more likely way you’ll get paid is through commissions.
Commissions mean you’ll get a percentage each time you get a customer to book a room. The amount you get depends on the room type and number of booked clients.
4. Travel Agency Marketing Manager
This is one of the best work from home travel jobs but it’s also the most demanding.
You need to be able to handle a travel agency’s whole marketing campaign. This involves content marketing for their website, keyword research, on-page optimization, and social media marketing too. You’ll be the person in charge of promotional materials and YouTube videos too.
5. Itinerary Planner
This is similar to a cruise planner except you’ll have to go more in-depth with the potential destinations. You’re not restricted to a cruise route.
Say for example you want to be an itinerary planner for people exploring Disney World in Orlando, Florida. You’ll have to communicate with different hotels, parking lot managers, and the folks at Disney World. Your job now is to help people plan their visit by arranging where to stay, where to eat, and planning out their daily activities at the park.
It helps to make multiple templates. You can make a 3-day plan, a 5-day plan, and a one-week plan. The longer the customer stays, the more they’ll pay you since you’ll have to plot out more activities and reservations.
6. Chat Support
If you’re not comfortable working on a phone then you can still get travel jobs from home through chat. Chat support jobs mean you’ll sit in front of a laptop and answer customers through a messaging app.
Some companies prefer to use AI and chatbots but there is one underlying issue with that process: chatbots can’t answer every question. They can only present pre-programmed answers and identify specific keywords. For more in-depth customer service, they need you.
7. Instagram Travel Influencer
Influencers gain a bad reputation simply because there are too many of them asking for freebies.
This is not the way to work as an influencer and is not how you should conduct this kind of part-time travel job! You also can’t slap the title to yourself and expect hotels, cruises, and tourist destinations to give you free accommodation or food in exchange for exposure.
What’s the right way to do it?
First, build a portfolio. Feature places like popular restaurants and tourist favorites without asking for anything free. Don’t even ask for a discount.
Simply feature them in your next Instagram post. Get your followers to try them out and then use analytic tools to track progress. This counts as your evidence that you can indeed influence people to spend money on something or a place.
Once you have a decent portfolio and happy clients who benefited from your free work, you now have the power to ask for discounts. That said, don’t demand it.
Ask a hotel or restaurant if it’s okay to feature them in your next post. They might be the ones to offer a discount or pay you through commissions.
