The first step in target marketing is to identify your target market. Ask yourself as few questions in order to accomplish this. What exactly is it that you are selling and why is it so different or unique. For instance, think about why folks would buy your product instead of getting it from a large retail chain. Also, think about who you want to sell to. Do you want to sell to parent or retirees? You need to have a group of people in mind to buy your product, which can be done through consumer mailing lists.
Once you have the answers to your questions, you will need to do a couple of things. First, you will need focus on your primary target. There are numerous business owners that fall into a trap in which they believe their product or service is a one size fits all. Your product will not be for everyone. Not everyone will need your product or your service.
You will need to research your target market. Your ads will not be effective if they do not appeal to what your customers need or are looking for. You can think of market research taking various forms. Demographics are important since you may want to sell locally. Publications are important since they track sales information, demographics and trends in your industry.
Consumer mailing lists are an easy way to identify your target market. These lists can target the consumers who are most likely to buy your products or services. There are no companies and no corporations on these lists. You can define the lists to the segments you want to target such as family size, geographical location, marital status or age.
