Home-based employees are growing by the day and so are the businesses that readily employ them. Working from home has plenty of benefits but not knowing where to start can keep you from enjoying them. Once you break that bubble, you should be able to reap the benefits of at-home employment. Here we’ll attempt to tackle commonly asked questions about home-based work and discuss its perks.
What job can I get?
I can’t come up with a list of jobs you can get online since there’s too many to mention. However, I can cite a few examples. You can work as a writer, web developer, web designer, app developer, virtual assistant, tutor, search engine optimization (SEO) specialist, link builder, researcher, or a transcriptionist from small businesses and companies. Generally speaking, you need to possess the following skills:
- Good English (speaking and/or writing)
- Knowledge on MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Specific qualifications vary, depending on the job opening and employer. Some employers are open to first-timers and some require a CV and previous experience. Almost all of them are willing to train you for new skills related to the job.
What does a work-at-home employee need?
If you want to work from home, you need to have a laptop or desktop PC. I recommend a laptop more because you can take it anywhere. Second, you must have a fast and reliable internet connection. Dial-up won’t do. A third tool you might need is a headset with microphone. This will be used for the interview if an employer requests one, for online conferences, and interaction with customers when required.
Is it really worth it?
Working from home has plenty of benefits but below are some of its most notable perks.
- Practical. You can keep watch of things at home and earn money at the same time. Whether you need to run an errand or do some general home cleaning, things are easily within reach now. No more worrying about your home from a cubicle that could be miles away.
- Saves time and money. The time and money you would have spent for travelling to the office (and back) can now be used for something else. Extra time can be used for your hobbies or taking care of the kids – if you have any. Meanwhile, you can use the extra cash to shoulder additional expenses on electricity and food.
- Flexibility of hours. Most work-at-home employees have flexible hours. That means they can work any time in a day and any day of the week. What matters is that you can comply the required working hours or complete the project assigned to you within a given period. Of course, this perk largely depends on the employer and your job. There are a few that still require you to work at certain hours of the day.
- Flexibility of working space. No longer are you confined to work at the same cubicle 40 hours a day, 5 days a week. You can work anywhere you like and not just your home. Just bring your laptop with you and find a place with a decent wireless internet.
