It’s easy to understand the allure of working from home. It offers an unprecedented level of freedom and control over our lives. The only thing better than working from home is working for yourself from home. Here are five businesses that anyone can start from their own home.
1. Collecting and Dealing
From antiques to stamps to keyrings, there’s no end to the items that people will collect and pay good money for. If you have some specialist knowledge, such as in the case of art or antiques, then you are already in an excellent position to begin monetising that knowledge. All you have to do is apply what you know.
You can set up your own website and business to sell these items through, or you can use existing services such as Amazon and eBay, both of which allow you to sell things directly to other people. Each of these approaches has their own advantages and disadvantages. With your own website, you will have much more control over the way that it looks, feels, and operates. On the other hand, Amazon and eBay both boast large, existing user bases, meaning that if there is existing interest for what you’re selling, it’s relatively easy to build a brand in a short space of time.
2. Arts & Crafts
If you have a talent for producing your own arts and crafts, whether they are jewellery, greeting cards, or anything else, you can turn your passion into a business with relative ease. Websites like Etsy make selling your arts and crafts easy and painless, although you can choose to build your own website to sell through if you prefer.
3. Bed and Breakfast
If you don’t mind having strangers in your home, or you are one of those people who even enjoys the idea, opening your home up as a bed and breakfast is an excellent way of meeting new people while earning a bit of cash at the same time. Many modern bed and breakfasts are largely or entirely self-catering, meaning that you are only providing a room for your guests, as well as the facilities for them to prepare meals etc. If you want to be more hands-on than this, there is nothing to stop you.
Being a bed and breakfast owner will allow you to cross paths with all kinds of people. You’d be surprised just how enriching and educational an experience it can be. If you are someone who enjoys witnessing, experiencing, and hearing about other cultures and lifestyles, being a bed and breakfast owner can be every bit as enriching as traveling the world yourself.
4. Web Design
People, both as individuals and as organizations, will always need websites. This is one of those industries that is essentially recession proof. Even in dire economic circumstances, businesses are still dependent on their websites as a way to reach new customers, and to serve existing ones.
Tools like the Web Eden site maker tool allow anyone to make their own website, but even these tools are only as good as the person using them. Being a web designer means having both the knowledge and the intuition to not only build a website, but to populate it with worthwhile content.
5. Blogging
The internet is a fantastic platform for people to share their thoughts and opinions on any subject that interests them. If you are a talented writer, then you can get away with writing about just about anything you like. Some bloggers, many of them in fact, simply write about their day to day lives and experiences. Obviously, if you lead a life that is notably more interesting and unique than most, this will give you an advantage, but it is by no means a requirement.
So, what are you waiting for? If you have always dreamed of running your own home business, take the plunge and dive in with any of the above ideas.
