This week we had the pleasure of interviewing Joseph Lavoie, Founder of Balanced Books by Joe.
1. Tell me about yourself.
I was born and raised in Southington Connecticut. I now reside in Meriden, Connecticut with my wife, daughter, and four cats. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance in 2005 from American Intercontinental University with a 3.8 GPA. I do walk with a cane and thus the company slogan “Just because Joe is “off balance” doesn’t mean your books have to be.”
2. How long have you been in the bookkeeping business?
I have been in business for myself since March of 2004. However prior to that I took care of bookkeeping duties in the private sector for nearly 18 years.
3. What services do you provide?
I provide the services my clients need. This could be from once a month entering your check register transactions and reconciling your checking account to everything from accounts payable and receivable transactions as well as payroll and general journal entries.
I am quite familiar with Quickbooks software from 2004 to present both desktop and online versions. I can offer just setting up the software for a client or do it all.
4. Do you have any tips for someone wanting to start a new business?
Talk to people in the industry you want to get started in. Go to someone who isn’t in your area and find out business sense from them. Things like how much start up cash? How much reserve cash? What equipment do I need to start and what can I purchase later? How long before I see a profit? Most importantly get expert legal, bookkeeping, and tax help.
5. Do you have any hobbies when you’re not working?
I am actively involved in my church serving with my wife as a growth group leader and once a month I help with the video internet feed. I enjoy doing crossword puzzles and building models when not spending game or movie time with my family.
Thanks for the interview, Joe!
