If you haven’t heard about Twitter, you were probably hibernating, or living a hermit’s life in the woods since 2006. Because every since its launch in July 2006, Twitter has been the rage that has taken the World Wide Web by storm. Twitter is arguably the world’s most popular microblogging site.

Twitter History

It was created by Jack Dorsey, and has surpassed the narrow constraints of a microblogging website to become a social platform, using which you reach out to the great world out there, sell your ideas, crate awareness about a cause that you are supporting, or find out what your favorite stars are doing, be it Lady Gaga or Barack Obama.

The site is now owned and managed with a company called Twitter Inc. which is located in San Francisco, California. There are other data centers in American cities like Texas, Boston and New York.

Once you acquire a Twitter account and sign it, you will be given 140 characters to answer the question: “what are you up to?” or “what’s on your mind?” and post it, for your fellow tweeters, or ‘followers’ to read and respond to.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a simple and convenient tool with which you can let the world know of what you are thinking or doing. It goes beyond emailing or other forms of social networking, as it is limited in terms of space, and basically captures every single mood or idea, in the shortest, crispest form: it’s the perfect communication tool for those running the rat race, with little or no time to expound at length on their activities and thoughts. So your friends, even those who live continents away, can be in sync with your life and your interests and your thoughts.

Every time you tweet out to the world, you basically let the world know you’re a part of it, let your followers know what you stand for, what your ideologies are. It can be used for all kinds of purposes: from mundane and commonplace to profound and sublime.

Follow Twitter Accounts

The most interesting aspect of Twitter is that it allows you to “follow” people: whether they are your favorite politicians, celebrities you adore, your matinee idols, or you spouse. You can also follow news dailies, or TV channels to keep abreast of what’s going on in the world around you.

Search Twitter

You can also search Twitter to keep track of popular trends: find out what’s going on in people’s minds, what are the most talked about incidents and activities people are tweeting about. So if you’re on Twitter, chances are you’ll never run out of things to talk about at a party.

What differentiates a tweet from an SMS is that one tweet can reach to as many people as are on your followers list, with one simple click. And of course, it’s free, so there are no charges for every message that you post.

What is a Hashtag?

A hashtag—written with a # symbol—is used to index keywords or topics on Twitter. This function was created on Twitter, and allows people to easily follow topics they are interested in.

One tweet means that you communicate with all those on your list, without you having to modify your settings or looking up your contact lists. It allows you to keep things simple, uncomplicated, and letting a large number of people know what you are up to.
